Description
The
VIPSeal VAC1924 adaptor coupling is a flexible
6 inch clay to PVC connector designed for underground drainage repairs and alterations where the two pipe outside diameters differ significantly. This
170-192mm to 144-160mm adaptor provides a useful
tight fit drainage connector and is commonly used as a
160mm PVC drainage adaptor when connecting older clay drainage to modern plastic pipework. VIPSeal manufactures VAC1924 as part of its step-moulded VAC adaptor coupling range. The larger connection accepts pipe outside diameters from 170mm to 192mm, while the smaller connection covers 144mm to 160mm. This makes it a tighter-fitting alternative to VAC6000 for suitable clay-to-PVC applications.
VIPSeal VAC1924 Adaptor Coupling
The
VIPSeal VAC1924 adaptor coupling is the genuine manufacturer reference for the 170–192mm / 144–160mm model within VIPSeal’s flexible adaptor range. The
VIPSeal VAC1924 adaptor coupling is 120mm wide and uses a 9mm thick step-moulded EPDM body with stainless-steel tension bands to secure each pipe connection independently.
Choosing the VIPSeal VAC1924 Adaptor Coupling
Choose the
VIPSeal VAC1924 adaptor coupling where the larger pipe measures between 170mm and 192mm externally and the smaller pipe measures between 144mm and 160mm. Always measure both pipe outside diameters before ordering, particularly when working with older clay, cast iron, pitch fibre or structured drainage systems.
6 Inch Clay to PVC Connector
The VAC1924 is commonly used as a
6 inch clay to PVC connector where older nominal 6 inch clay drainage needs to transition into compatible modern 160mm PVC-U underground drainage. Although both pipes may be described using similar nominal sizes, their actual outside diameters can differ. A flexible
6 inch clay to PVC connector bridges that difference without requiring makeshift bushes or multiple rigid fittings.
Installing a 6 Inch Clay to PVC Connector
Before fitting the
6 inch clay to PVC connector, expose sound pipe surfaces and measure the actual outside diameter of both pipes. Do not measure over sockets, collars or damaged sections. The larger pipe must fall within 170–192mm and the smaller pipe within 144–160mm. Clean both pipe surfaces, position the adaptor centrally over the joint and tighten the stainless-steel tension bands evenly using the manufacturer’s specified torque.
170-192mm to 144-160mm Adaptor
The
170-192mm to 144-160mm adaptor has two clearly defined connection ranges:
- Larger pipe O/D: 170–192mm
- Smaller pipe O/D: 144–160mm
- Overall coupling width: 120mm
- Coupling thickness: 9mm
The stepped body of the
170-192mm to 144-160mm adaptor allows significantly different pipe sizes to be connected within one flexible fitting.
Selecting a 170-192mm to 144-160mm Adaptor
Both pipes should sit comfortably within the stated ranges. If either pipe falls outside them, select another VIPSeal VAC adaptor size rather than attempting to stretch or over-compress the fitting.
Tight Fit Drainage Connector
VAC1924 is particularly useful as a
tight fit drainage connector because its smaller connection covers 144–160mm rather than the wider 160–180mm range used by VAC6000. The larger connection is also slightly smaller, covering 170–192mm instead of VAC6000’s 180–200mm range. This means the
tight fit drainage connector is often the better choice where both existing pipe measurements sit below the VAC6000 ranges.
VAC1924 Tight Fit Drainage Connector vs VAC6000
Choose VAC1924 where the pipe outside diameters fall within 170–192mm and 144–160mm. Choose VAC6000 where the pipe outside diameters fall within 180–200mm and 160–180mm. Do not choose between them solely by the description “6 inch”. Actual pipe O/D is the measurement that determines the correct fitting.
160mm PVC Drainage Adaptor
The 144–160mm smaller connection allows VAC1924 to be used as a
160mm PVC drainage adaptor on compatible plastic underground drainage pipe. A
160mm PVC drainage adaptor of this type is useful when replacing damaged sections of older drainage, extending an existing run or transitioning from older clay or other compatible materials into modern plastic pipework.
160mm PVC Drainage Adaptor Applications
The
160mm PVC drainage adaptor can be used on suitable foul-water and surface-water drainage systems where the actual pipe dimensions fall within the manufacturer’s stated ranges.
Compatible Larger Pipe Applications
Published VAC1924 compatibility information commonly identifies the larger 170–192mm side with pipe systems including:
- 150mm vitrified clay drainage
- 150mm Supersleve clay
- 150mm Ultra-Rib
- 150mm ductile iron
- 150mm cast iron drain pipe
- 150mm asbestos cement pipe
- 150mm pitch fibre
- 150mm twin-wall plastic pipe
Compatibility still depends on the actual outside diameter rather than material description alone.
Compatible Smaller Pipe Applications
The 144–160mm smaller side is commonly suited to:
- Compatible 160mm PVC-U underground drainage
- 150mm cast iron SMU / Ensign / SML systems
- Other compatible pipe materials within the 144–160mm outside-diameter range
EPDM Step-Moulded Construction
VIPSeal manufactures its VAC adaptor coupling range from EPDM rubber. VAC1924 uses a step-moulded body that reduces between the two different pipe diameter ranges. The EPDM construction provides the flexibility required for the coupling to form around compatible drainage pipe surfaces while allowing each end to be tightened independently.
304 Stainless-Steel Tension Bands
VIPSeal supplies standard VAC1924 couplings with 304 stainless-steel tension bands. VIPSeal can also supply 316 stainless-steel versions for applications with a higher corrosion risk, contaminated ground or marine exposure. These are separate product configurations and should not be assumed to be supplied as standard.
6Nm Tightening Torque
VIPSeal specifies a tightening torque of
6Nm for VAC adaptor couplings within the VAC1924 diameter range. Both tension bands should be tightened evenly using a suitable torque-controlled tool to provide consistent compression around the pipe surfaces.
0.6 Bar Pressure Rating
The VIPSeal VAC range has a manufacturer pressure rating of
0.6 bar / 8.7psi. VAC1924 is designed for suitable drainage and low-pressure applications rather than general high-pressure pipework.
120 Bar Jetting Resistance
VIPSeal specifies a
120 bar jetting resistance for its VAC adaptor coupling range. This figure relates to resistance during drainage jetting and should not be confused with the 0.6 bar internal working-pressure rating.
Working Temperature Range
VIPSeal specifies a constant working temperature range of
-10°C to +60°C for VAC adaptor couplings.
VAC1924 Underground Drainage Applications
The
VIPSeal VAC1924 adaptor coupling is useful for applications including:
- 6 inch clay to 160mm PVC drainage connections
- Underground drainage repair work
- Replacing damaged clay drainage with plastic pipe
- Foul-water drainage alterations
- Surface-water drainage alterations
- Connections involving differing pipe materials
- Connections to compatible chambers and drainage structures
- Older drainage systems where pipe dimensions vary
VAC1924 vs VAC6000
VAC1924 is the tighter-fitting option where both pipe measurements are smaller than those required by VAC6000.
- VAC1924: 170–192mm / 144–160mm
- VAC6000: 180–200mm / 160–180mm
There is some overlap on the larger side, but the smaller-side ranges are substantially different. Measure both pipes before choosing between the two.
