Description

Clay to PVC Connector for Underground Drainage

The clay to PVC connector joins compatible 4-inch clay drainage pipe to 110mm PVC underground drainage pipe. This VIPSeal VAC1362 adaptor has a tighter 100–115mm plastic connection, making it suitable where a closer fit around the PVC pipe is required. The larger side accepts pipe with an outside diameter of 121–136mm, while the smaller side accepts pipe measuring 100–115mm externally. Therefore, both pipes must be measured before ordering because nominal 4-inch clay and plastic pipes can vary in outside diameter.

Clay to PVC Connector Size Range

  • Larger pipe connection: 121–136mm
  • Smaller pipe connection: 100–115mm
  • Nominal application: 4-inch clay to 110mm PVC
  • Overall coupling width: 100mm
  • Step-moulded adaptor design
  • Flexible EPDM rubber construction
  • Two stainless-steel tension bands
  • VIPSeal product code VAC1362
The stepped profile bridges the difference between the two pipe diameters. In addition, the stainless-steel bands tighten independently around each pipe, creating a secure mechanical connection without solvent cement or a conventional drainage socket.

Why Is the VAC1362 a Tighter-Fit Connector?

The VAC1362 has a 100–115mm smaller connection. This range closely matches many plain-ended 110mm PVC underground drainage pipes, which commonly measure around 110mm externally. As a result, the connector provides a tighter adjustment range than adaptors designed to accept larger plastic or socket dimensions. However, the term “tighter fit” does not remove the need to measure the pipe. The PVC pipe must fall within the stated 100–115mm range.

Where to Use the Clay to PVC Connector

Use this fitting when an existing clay drain needs to connect to compatible PVC underground drainage pipe. It is suitable for drainage repairs, alterations, extensions and partial replacement projects. Typical applications include:
  • Replacing a damaged section of clay drainage pipe
  • Connecting existing clay drainage to new PVC pipework
  • Extending an underground drainage run
  • Repairing a clay-to-plastic drainage connection
  • Joining pipes with significantly different outside diameters
  • Domestic, commercial and general groundwork installations
The flexible body can accommodate small differences in alignment. Nevertheless, both pipes must remain correctly positioned, supported and installed to the required drainage fall.

Measure Both Pipes Before Ordering

Always measure the outside diameter of each pipe. Do not rely solely on the nominal 4-inch or 110mm description because clay pipe dimensions can differ according to its age, manufacturer and construction. First, expose and clean a sound section of each pipe. Next, measure directly across the outside using a suitable pipe-measuring tape or calliper. The larger pipe must measure between 121mm and 136mm, while the smaller pipe must measure between 100mm and 115mm. Measure the exact sections that will sit inside the connector. Avoid taking the measurement from a clay socket, plastic fitting socket or damaged section because these areas may have a larger or uneven outside diameter.

Preparing the Clay and PVC Pipework

Cut both pipes as square as possible. Then remove soil, grease, grit, loose clay, burrs and sharp edges. The coupling must sit against clean and structurally sound pipe surfaces. Take care when cutting older clay drainage because cracks can travel beyond the intended cut. Support the existing pipe correctly and cut it back further if the exposed edge is cracked, crumbling or badly distorted. Inspect the PVC pipe as well. Remove sharp burrs that could damage the inside of the EPDM coupling during installation.

Installing the VIPSeal VAC1362

First, loosen both stainless-steel tension bands without removing them from the coupling. Slide the larger end onto the compatible clay pipe and move it far enough along the pipe to allow the second pipe to be positioned. Next, align the PVC drainage pipe and centre the coupling across the joint. Check the pipe position and drainage fall before tightening either band. Tighten the bands gradually and evenly using a suitable tool. Keep the coupling straight while tightening and make sure the EPDM body does not twist, fold or pull away from either pipe. Do not use the coupling to support the weight of the drainage run. Instead, bed and support both pipes correctly so movement does not place unnecessary strain on the completed connection.

Checking the Completed Connection

Before backfilling, inspect the complete joint. Confirm that both tension bands sit squarely, the coupling grips each pipe evenly and the drainage pipe retains the required alignment and fall. Keep sharp stones and building debris away from the flexible coupling. Where required, complete the appropriate drainage inspection or test before covering the connection.
