Description

The VIPSeal VDC135 drain coupling is a flexible 4 inch clay pipe connector designed to join compatible plain-ended drainage pipes with outside diameters between 120mm and 135mm. This 120-135mm flexible coupling is particularly useful as a clay to clay drainage connector and is manufactured as a durable EPDM drain pipe coupling with stainless-steel tension bands. VIPSeal manufactures VDC135 as part of its VDC Drain Coupling range. Both ends of the coupling accept pipe within the same 120–135mm outside-diameter range, making it suitable for joining compatible pipes of similar diameter rather than acting as a stepped reducing adaptor.

VIPSeal specifies VDC135 as 120mm wide, with a pipe outside-diameter range of 120–135mm. The flexible design allows the coupling to accommodate minor differences between the two pipes being joined.

4 Inch Clay Pipe Connector

The VDC135 is commonly used as a 4 inch clay pipe connector where two compatible clay drainage pipes need to be joined or a damaged section of existing pipework needs to be repaired. A 4 inch clay pipe connector can also be useful when joining clay to another compatible pipe material, provided both outside diameters fall within the 120–135mm operating range.

Installing a 4 Inch Clay Pipe Connector

Before fitting the 4 inch clay pipe connector, expose sound sections of both pipes and measure their outside diameters. Do not measure across sockets, collars or damaged sections. Clean the pipe surfaces thoroughly, position the coupling centrally across the joint and tighten both stainless-steel tension bands evenly to the manufacturer’s specified torque.

120-135mm Flexible Coupling

The 120-135mm flexible coupling accommodates compatible plain-ended pipes throughout its stated diameter range. This makes the 120-135mm flexible coupling particularly useful for drainage repair work where slight variations in pipe outside diameter can make conventional rigid fittings difficult to use.

Both pipes must fall within the 120–135mm range. If one pipe is significantly smaller than the other, a stepped VIPSeal VAC adaptor coupling may be more appropriate than VDC135.

EPDM Drain Pipe Coupling

VIPSeal manufactures the VDC range from elastomeric EPDM rubber, making VDC135 a flexible EPDM drain pipe coupling. The EPDM drain pipe coupling is supplied with 304 stainless-steel tension bands as standard. VIPSeal can also supply alternative 316 stainless-steel bands for environments where increased corrosion resistance is required.

EPDM Drain Pipe Coupling Construction

The flexible EPDM sleeve conforms around compatible pipe surfaces while the stainless-steel bands secure each end independently. Unlike VIPSeal VSC standard couplings, VDC couplings do not have a central stainless-steel shear band.

VIPSeal states that VDC Drain Couplings can join pipes made from different materials, provided the outside diameters fall within the specified coupling range. Typical compatible applications can include:

6Nm Tightening Torque

VIPSeal specifies a tightening torque of 6Nm for the current VDC Drain Coupling range. Both tension bands should be tightened evenly using a suitable torque-controlled tool to achieve consistent compression around the pipes.

0.6 Bar Pressure Rating

The VDC Drain Coupling range has a manufacturer pressure rating of 0.6 bar / 8.70psi. VDC135 is intended for low and non-pressure drainage systems rather than general high-pressure pipeline applications.

120 Bar Jetting Resistance

VIPSeal specifies a 120 bar jetting resistance for its VDC Drain Couplings. This is a jetting-resistance specification and should not be confused with the coupling’s 0.6 bar internal pressure rating.

Working Temperature Range

VIPSeal’s current VDC-specific technical datasheet specifies a constant working temperature range of -10°C to +60°C.

Important – VDC Coupling or VSC Coupling?

VIPSeal VDC couplings are supplied without a central stainless-steel shear band. They are designed for low and non-pressure drainage applications where additional resistance to heavy earth loads or pipe deflection is not required. VIPSeal states that where shear or deflection resistance under heavy earth loads is required, or where the installation falls under WIS 4-41-01, a VIPSeal VSC Standard Coupling should be used instead.
