6 inch PVC pipe connector for joining and repairing compatible plain-ended underground drainage pipework. This
140-165mm flexible coupling is commonly used as a
160mm PVC drainage coupling and provides a durable
EPDM drain repair coupling for suitable low and non-pressure foul-water and surface-water drainage systems. VIPSeal manufactures VDC165 as part of its VDC Drain Coupling range. The coupling accepts compatible pipe outside diameters from 140mm to 165mm and is commonly used with 160mm PVC-U drainage pipework.

VIPSeal VDC165 flexible connector uses an EPDM rubber sleeve with stainless-steel tension bands and is designed to join compatible plain-ended pipes without requiring a conventional rigid socket.
Choosing the VIPSeal VDC165 Flexible Connector
Choose the
VIPSeal VDC165 flexible connector where both pipe outside diameters fall between 140mm and 165mm. Always measure the actual outside diameter of both pipes before ordering. Nominal descriptions such as 6 inch, 150mm and 160mm should not replace an actual O/D measurement.
Installing the VIPSeal VDC165 Flexible Connector
Before installing the
VIPSeal VDC165 flexible connector, make sure both pipe ends are structurally sound, reasonably aligned and free from dirt, loose material and sharp damage. Position the coupling centrally across the joint and tighten both stainless-steel tension bands evenly to the manufacturer’s specified torque of 6Nm.
6 Inch PVC Pipe Connector
VDC165 is commonly used as a
6 inch PVC pipe connector for compatible underground drainage pipework. A
6 inch PVC pipe connector of this type is particularly useful for repairs and alterations because it can join plain-ended sections without requiring a moulded socket or solvent-welded fitting.

140-165mm Flexible Coupling
The
140-165mm flexible coupling is selected according to actual pipe outside diameter. Both ends of VDC165 cover the same 140–165mm range, making it a straight drain coupling rather than a stepped reducing adaptor.
Selecting a 140-165mm Flexible Coupling
Both pipe ends should sit comfortably within the stated range. If either pipe measures outside 140–165mm, select another VIPSeal coupling or adaptor rather than attempting to over-stretch or over-compress the
140-165mm flexible coupling.

160mm PVC Drainage Coupling
VDC165 is particularly useful as a
160mm PVC drainage coupling because VIPSeal specifically lists 160mm PVC-U among its common applications. A
160mm PVC drainage coupling can be used to join two compatible sections of plain-ended PVC-U pipe, repair a damaged drainage run or introduce a replacement pipe section.
Using a 160mm PVC Drainage Coupling
When using VDC165 as a
160mm PVC drainage coupling, measure both pipe outside diameters before installation and make sure the sealing areas are clean and sound. The surrounding pipework should also be correctly bedded and supported so excessive movement is not transferred into the flexible connection.
EPDM Drain Repair Coupling
VIPSeal manufactures VDC drain couplings from EPDM rubber, making VDC165 a durable
EPDM drain repair coupling. The flexible EPDM sleeve conforms around compatible pipe surfaces while stainless-steel tension bands mechanically secure the connection at both ends.
EPDM Drain Repair Coupling Construction
The standard
EPDM drain repair coupling uses 1.4301 / 304 stainless-steel hardware. VIPSeal can also supply alternative 316 stainless-steel configurations for applications where greater corrosion resistance is required. The standard VDC165 should therefore be listed as EPDM with 304 stainless-steel tension bands unless your physical stock is specifically marked as an alternative version.
Compatible Pipe Materials
Although this product is presented primarily as a PVC-to-PVC connector, VIPSeal states that VDC drain couplings can join compatible pipes manufactured from different materials where the outside diameters fall within the correct range. Manufacturer-listed common VDC165 applications include:
- 160mm PVC-U
- 150mm cast iron
- 150mm SML / Ensign-type cast iron
- 150mm stainless steel
- 160mm polyethylene
Actual pipe outside diameter remains the deciding factor when selecting the correct coupling.
6Nm Tightening Torque
VIPSeal specifies a tightening torque of
6Nm for the VDC range. Both tension bands should be tightened evenly using a suitable torque-controlled tool to provide consistent compression around the pipe surfaces.
0.6 Bar Pressure Rating
The VIPSeal VDC range has a manufacturer pressure rating of
0.6 bar / 8.70psi. VDC165 is therefore intended for suitable low and non-pressure drainage systems rather than general high-pressure pipeline applications.
120 Bar Jetting Resistance
VIPSeal specifies a
120 bar jetting resistance for VDC drain couplings. This relates to drainage jetting resistance and should not be confused with the 0.6 bar internal working-pressure rating.
Working Temperature Range
The current VIPSeal VDC technical datasheet specifies a constant working temperature range of
-50°C to +60°C.
Important – VDC165 Has No Central Shear Band
VDC165 is a drain coupling and does not include the central stainless-steel shear band found on VIPSeal VSC Standard Couplings. VIPSeal specifies VDC couplings for low and non-pressure drainage applications where resistance to earth loads is not required. For installations that require shear or deflection resistance under heavy earth loads, or applications falling under WIS 4-41-01, VIPSeal advises using an appropriate VSC Standard Coupling instead.

VDC165 vs Stepped Adaptor Couplings
VDC165 is a straight coupling with the same 140–165mm range at both ends. If the two pipes have significantly different outside diameters, use an appropriate VIPSeal VAC stepped adaptor rather than using VDC165 as a reducer.
