4 Inch Clay to PVC Connector for Underground Drainage
The
clay to PVC connector provides a flexible connection between compatible 4-inch clay drainage pipe and 110mm PVC underground drainage pipe. The VIPSeal VAC4000 accepts pipe outside diameters of
121–136mm on the larger side and
110–121mm on the smaller side. This stepped adaptor coupling is ideal for repairs, alterations and replacement drainage work where older clay pipework needs to connect to modern plastic drainage pipe. Its flexible construction helps accommodate small differences in pipe diameter while the securing bands provide a firm mechanical connection.

Always measure the actual outside diameter of both pipes before ordering. Nominal descriptions such as 4-inch clay and 110mm PVC do not guarantee compatibility because pipe dimensions can vary according to material, age and manufacturer.
Where to Use the Clay to PVC Connector
Use this fitting where an existing clay drainage run needs to connect to compatible plastic underground drainage pipework. It is particularly useful during repairs where part of an older clay drain has been removed and replaced with modern PVC pipe. Typical applications include:

Measuring for the Clay to PVC Connector
Measure the outside diameter of each pipe at the exact point where the coupling will sit. Do not measure across an enlarged socket, collar or damaged section because this can give an incorrect result. The larger pipe must measure between
121mm and 136mm. The smaller pipe must measure between
110mm and 121mm. If either pipe falls outside these limits, choose a different adaptor coupling. Older clay drainage systems can vary significantly in external diameter. Therefore, measuring the actual pipe is more reliable than ordering solely from the nominal pipe size.
Preparing the Clay to PVC Connector Joint
First, expose enough of both pipes to create clean and sound connection surfaces. Cut the pipe ends square where necessary and remove mud, grease, loose clay, burrs and other debris. Take particular care when cutting older clay pipe because cracks can travel beyond the intended cut. If the exposed pipe edge is cracked, crumbling or badly distorted, cut it back to a sound section before installing the coupling. Check the PVC pipe as well and remove sharp burrs that could damage the inside of the flexible coupling.
Installing the Clay to PVC Connector
Loosen the securing bands without removing them from the coupling. Slide the larger end onto the compatible clay pipe and position the PVC pipe at the smaller end. Next, align both pipes and centre the coupling across the joint. Check the required drainage fall before tightening the bands. Tighten each band gradually and evenly using a suitable tool. Keep the adaptor straight while tightening and make sure the rubber sleeve does not twist, fold or pull away from either pipe. Support both pipes correctly so the coupling joins the pipework rather than carrying the weight of an unsupported drainage run.
Clay to PVC Connector for Drainage Repairs
The VAC4000 can simplify drainage repairs where a damaged clay section needs to be replaced with plastic pipe. The stepped design bridges the difference between the larger clay pipe and smaller PVC drainage pipe without requiring a rigid socket adaptor. Its flexible construction can also accommodate minor differences in alignment. However, the surrounding pipework should still be correctly bedded and installed to the required fall.
VAC4000 or VAC1362 Clay to PVC Connector?
The VAC4000 has a smaller-side adjustment range of
110–121mm. The VIPSeal VAC1362 tighter-fit adaptor instead has a smaller connection range of
100–115mm. Therefore, do not select between the two products simply because both are described as 4-inch clay-to-PVC connectors. Measure the plastic pipe outside diameter first and choose the coupling whose adjustment range correctly matches the pipe.
Supporting the Clay to PV Connector
Provide suitable bedding around the connected drainage pipes and maintain the required fall throughout the run. Avoid placing sharp stones, rubble or other damaging material directly against the flexible coupling. Before backfilling, inspect both ends of the connector. Check that the securing bands sit evenly, the sleeve has not twisted and both pipes remain correctly aligned.
